OCLC Terminologies Service: Index Browsing

Browsing helps you find the best term to use in your search. It lets you view an alphabetical list of the terms in an index. Click a term in the list to view the search results for that term.

Begin to browse

To begin to browse:

  1. Type a Scan command in the Search For box.
  2. Select a thesaurus or All OCLC Terminologies in the drop-down list.
  3. Click Start searching button if browsing did not begin when you selected a thesaurus.

Scan command includes:

  1. scan or sca
  2. An index label (if you do not type an index label, the All (al:) index is browsed)
  3. One or more letters or numbers to specify the place in the index where you want to begin browsing

Scan command examples:

When browsing begins:

  1. Start searching button changes to Stop searching button (Click it if you want to stop.)
  2. The browse results list appears so you can view index terms.

Indexes and labels for browsing

You can use the index labels listed below in a Scan command when you browse.

The list below focuses on the phrase indexes available in the Terminologies Service because they are used most often for browsing. The service also has word indexes which are most often used for searching. For a list of all indexes, see Indexes and labels for searching.

Indexes covering the parts of authority records

The following indexes are used to browse preferred terms, non-preferred terms, or both preferred and non-preferred terms in authority records.

View index terms while browsing

When you enter a Scan command, the Terminologies Service displays a page listing ten index terms. Your command appears in the Search For box. The term closest to the one in your command appears at the middle of the terms listed. To the right of each term, the code for the term's thesaurus appears in brackets and the number of authority records retrieved by the term appears in parentheses.

Click the Next link to view the page of index terms that follow alphabetically the terms on the page that you are currently viewing. To display the next page, the service enters a Scan command for the last term on the current page.

Click the Previous link to view the page of index terms that precede alphabetically the terms on the page that you are currently viewing. To display the previous page, the service enters a Scan command for the first term on the current page.

Clik the Back (Previous search) button or the Forward (Next search) button to go back and forward through pages that you have already viewed.

Select an index term to search

When you click on an index term that retrieves two or more records for preferred terms,

Click on an index term

the service searches for the term and displays a list of the preferred terms. (For more information about viewing search results, see Results.)

the service searches for the term and displays the record for the preferred term. (For more information about viewing preferred terms, see Preferred term.)
